Panton chair
The first chair moulded in a single piece of plastic, without legs.
Verner Panton designed the chair at the end of the 1950s, but it took several years to find a material and a method that could manage the form. It went into production in 1967, made together with Vitra.
With its bright colours the chair became a symbol of pop and the space age. It has been made in several different plastics as the technology has changed.
Materials: Plastic; first glass-fibre reinforced polyester, later polyurethane foam and thermoplastic
Manufacture: Moulded in a single mould, back, seat and base at once.
No joint, no screws, no legs – just one bent surface.
The cantilevered seat resting on the curved base.
The chairs stack inside one another.
