Patten

The wooden platform with an iron ring that lifted the shoe above the dirt of the street.

The patten was strapped under the ordinary shoe to keep it dry and clean in the mud of the street. It was worn by both women and men in Europe, especially in England, from the Middle Ages to the 19th century.

The sound of pattens on the paving was well known. The patten is a forerunner of galoshes and overshoes.
