The tape cassette that made it possible to record and carry music.

Lou Ottens led the development at Philips in Hasselt. The cassette was small enough to fit in a pocket and the tape was protected by the shell.

Philips let other makers use the standard without a fee, so the cassette spread quickly across the world. It became the basis of portable music and car stereos.

Materials: Plastic shell, polyester magnetic tape
