Hinckley Picnic Boat

The elegant motorboat in the Maine tradition, with a water jet instead of a propeller.

Hinckley had built boats in Maine since 1928 when the yard showed the Picnic Boat in 1994. The form was taken from the region’s lobster boats, but the build was lavish and the details as careful as on a yacht.

The water jet gave the boat a shallow draught and made it safe to swim from. The Picnic Boat created a new type of elegant day boat, often called the Downeast style, that many yards have since followed.

Materials: Glass-reinforced plastic, teak and mahogany, water jet

Manufacture: Made by Hinckley in Southwest Harbor, Maine, from 1994.

The high, flared bow and the deck sweeping down to the low stern.

The wheelhouse with a hardtop and open sides aft.

No propeller under the boat – it is driven by a water jet.
