China head doll
A doll with a glazed porcelain head and painted hair on a cloth body, mass-produced in Thuringia.
China dolls were made in great numbers in Germany and exported worldwide. The hairstyles followed fashion and make it possible to date them. Examples are in the V&A Museum of Childhood and the Metropolitan Museum.
Materials: Glazed porcelain, cloth, sawdust, leather
Manufacture: The head was slip-cast in a plaster mould, fired and painted; the body sewn and stuffed separately.
The shiny glazed head with painted black hair and centre parting.
The soft cloth body contrasting with the hard head.
