A cast bronze pan with three legs and a long handle, to stand directly in the fire.

Bronze pans were often made by the same founders who cast church bells. They were used in kitchens for centuries before cast iron. Examples are in the Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Museum.

Materials: Cast bronze

Manufacture: Cast in a sand mould; the handle often carried a cast motto or the founder’s name.

The three legs that held the pan over the embers.

The lettering on the handle – often a proverb or the owner’s name.
