Poster for the 14th Secession exhibition

Roller’s poster for the Beethoven exhibition: a stylised figure and letters stretched into a pattern.
The 1902 exhibition centred on Max Klinger’s Beethoven sculpture and Klimt’s Beethoven Frieze. Roller’s lettering shows how text became image in the Vienna Secession. Copies are in the MAK and the Leopold Museum.
Materials: Colour lithograph on paper
Manufacture: The letters drawn by hand and fitted to the tall, narrow format of the sheet.
The elongated, angular letters filling the surface like a pattern.
The tall narrow format, typical of Vienna.
