A brooch shaped as a bow, densely set with stones – the fashionable jewel of the 17th century.

The bow brooch is named after the letter-writer Madame de Sévigné and was worn on the bodice. It became one of the most copied jewels of the 17th century. Examples are in the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Louvre.

Materials: Silver and gold, diamonds or rock crystal, enamel

Manufacture: The stones were set in closed settings with foil behind, close together along the ribbon.
