Soft-paste porcelain with deep ground colours, gilt borders and painted reserves – the king’s own porcelain.

The factory moved to Sèvres in 1756 with the support of Madame de Pompadour and became Louis XV’s own. Its porcelain was Europe’s most coveted luxury. Examples are in the Wallace Collection, the Louvre and the Musée national de céramique at Sèvres.

Materials: Soft-paste porcelain, enamels, gilding

Manufacture: Ground colour fired first, white panels reserved for painting, the gilding burnished with agate.

Ground colours with names like rose Pompadour and bleu céleste.

The interlaced Ls in blue under the base, often with a date letter.
