Pearson Scott Foresman, Public domain

The Scottish pouch that hangs at the front of the kilt.

Highland dress had no pockets, so coins and small things were carried in a pouch in front of the belly. Sporran means purse in Gaelic.

Traditional sporrans were of leather and fur. Dress sporrans have silver mounts with engraved patterns and are used on formal occasions.

Materials: Leather, fur, silver or brass mounts

Manufacture: Sewn from leather with fur and metal mounts, fastened to a belt or chain.

The tassels or fur over the pouch.

The silver mount and the clasp.

The chain or strap that fastens it to the belt.
