A small elephant pincushion that became Steiff’s first soft toy.

Margarete Steiff sewed the elephant as a gift in 1880, but children wanted to play with it. It was the start of one of the world’s best-known toy companies. Examples are in the Steiff Museum in Giengen.

Materials: Felt, wool stuffing

Manufacture: Sewn in felt after a pattern from a fashion magazine and stuffed with wool.

The simple silhouette with raised trunk.

The felt – the same material Steiff’s workshop made clothes from.
