Le Thermogène

Le Thermogène
Ellis, Public domain

A small pierrot spitting fire from a packet of heat-giving wadding – advertising as one memorable sign.

Cappiello’s poster for a warming cotton wadding became a textbook example of modern advertising. The figure was used by the brand for decades. Copies are in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs and the Bibliothèque Forney in Paris.

Materials: Colour lithograph on paper

Manufacture: A light figure on a dark ground, printed in few colours to be seen from afar.

The light figure against black – it shines out from the wall.

The image says nothing about the product; it is only meant to stick in the mind.
