Inscription on Trajan’s Column

The Roman capitals on the column’s base – the model for almost all later roman capitals.
The inscription of AD 113 was studied by Renaissance lettering masters and gave its name to the typeface Trajan in 1989. Casts are in the Victoria and Albert Museum; the original stands in Trajan’s Forum in Rome.
Materials: Marble
Manufacture: The letters were first painted with a broad brush and then cut in the stone; the brush gave serifs and thick-thin contrast.
The serifs and the shift between thick and thin strokes, as from a broad brush.
The wide round O, C and D and the narrow E, F and S.
