La troupe de Mademoiselle Églantine

La troupe de Mademoiselle Églantine, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Public domain

Four dancers kicking in time with the frilled skirts in motion.

Lautrec made the poster for a dance troupe that travelled from Paris to perform in London. The dancers perform the cancan, a number in which legs and petticoats are lifted high.

The movement is built from repeated forms: four raised legs, four skirts and four heads. That gives a rhythm like a pattern.

Materials: Colour lithograph on paper

Manufacture: Printed as a colour lithograph in Paris in 1896.
