Wafer iron

Two engraved iron plates on long arms that baked thin wafers over an open fire.
Wafer irons were common wedding gifts in the Netherlands and Belgium. They show how kitchen tools could carry a family’s history. Examples are in the Rijksmuseum and the Nordic Museum.
Materials: Wrought and cast iron
Manufacture: The plates were forged or cast and engraved with patterns, arms or dates that were printed into the batter.
The long arms keeping the hands away from the fire.
The engraving on the plates – often a wedding year or the couple’s initials.
