Vegetable Tree

A tree where each branch bears its own leaves and fruits.

Josef Frank drew the pattern in New York in 1944, during the war, when he was teaching there. His fabrics for Svenskt Tenn are full of plants that do not exist in nature.

Frank believed that pattern makes a room calm, because the eye has something to rest on. His fabrics broke with the smooth surfaces of functionalism.

Materials: Linen or cotton

Manufacture: Printed fabric, sold by Svenskt Tenn.

The branches bearing different kinds of leaves and flowers.

The pattern winding upwards without a clear repeat.

Bright colours against a light ground.
