A. Lange & Söhne
The watchmaker of Glashütte in Saxony, known for hand-finished movements in untreated German silver and the outsize date of the Lange 1.
Ferdinand Adolph Lange opened his workshop in Glashütte in 1845 and laid the foundations of the Saxon watch industry. The firm made high-grade pocket watches until the Second World War, when the factory was damaged; after the war the watch industry in East Germany was nationalised.
Ferdinand Adolph Lange's great-grandson Walter Lange revived the brand after German reunification, and the first new wristwatches were shown in 1994. Since then the brand has ranked among the most respected in fine watchmaking, with a tradition of its own distinct from the Swiss.
A three-quarter plate of untreated German silver over the movement and hand-engraved balance cocks.
The outsize date in two windows, as on the Lange 1, and dials with Saxon typography.
