Aquascutum

London firm that developed waterproof woollen cloth and, like Burberry, became known for the trench coat.

Aquascutum was founded in London by the tailor John Emary, and the name is Latin for water shield. The company developed a water-repellent treatment for wool and made coats for officers as early as the Crimean War, according to the firm's own history.

During the First World War Aquascutum made coats for British officers, and both Aquascutum and Burberry have claimed to have been first with the trench coat. The brand became part of the classic British men's wardrobe, with a shop on Regent Street in London.

Labels reading Aquascutum of London; older garments often have Regent Street on the label.
