Lotus

British maker of light sports cars and racing cars, founded by the engineer Colin Chapman.

Colin Chapman built his first car in London in the 1940s and founded Lotus Engineering in 1952. His motto was to simplify and add lightness, and Lotus won in Formula One with new solutions such as the load-bearing monocoque.

The Seven of 1957 was a simple kit car that is still made by others, and the Elan of 1962 and the Esprit of 1976, designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, became the marque's best-known road cars. Lotus is now owned by China's Geely.
