Charles Frederick Worth

Fashion designer

English dressmaker in Paris usually regarded as the founder of haute couture.

Charles Frederick Worth worked for drapers in London and Paris before opening his own fashion house on the Rue de la Paix in Paris in 1858. Empress Eugénie became his client, and with her the whole court.

Worth showed finished designs on live models for clients to choose from, and sewed his name into the garments. His sons carried on the house into the 20th century.
