Avenue Theatre

Beardsley’s theatre poster: a woman behind a sheer curtain, in blue and green with large empty areas.
The poster was made for A Comedy of Sighs and Shaw’s Arms and the Man in London in 1894. It drew both outrage and admiration. Copies are in the Victoria and Albert Museum.
Materials: Colour lithograph on paper
Manufacture: Printed in two colours; the empty area matters as much as the drawing.
The dots of the curtain letting the figure show through.
The bold emptiness – almost half the poster is plain colour.
