Wooden railway
Brio’s beechwood railway with track that can be laid in many ways – a Swedish toy of 1958 that became an international standard.
Brio, which began as a basket maker in Osby, launched its wooden railway in 1958. The track could be joined into different layouts, and the child could extend the system piece by piece.
Its dimensions and joints became so widespread that other makers produce track compatible with Brio’s. The design is protected, so only a drawing is shown.
Materials: Beech, later with magnets and plastic parts
Manufacture: Milled and lacquered wood from Osby in Skåne.
Wooden track grooved on both sides with jigsaw-shaped joints.
Wagons coupled with magnets (from the 1980s) or hooks.
Brio markings under the locomotive or wagon.
