Callaway Big Bertha
The large-headed driver that made the ball easier to hit.
Ely Callaway bought a small golf company in California and launched Big Bertha, a driver with a bigger head and a bigger sweet spot than earlier clubs. The name was borrowed from a heavy German howitzer of the First World War.
The club sold in large numbers and showed that equipment could make the game easier. It paved the way for the large drivers that dominate golf today.
