Bruno Mathsson’s easy chair: a frame of bent laminated birch that follows the curves of the body.
Bruno Mathsson studied how people sit and in 1934 drew a chair after the profile of the body. He called the work the mechanics of sitting.
The chair was shown at the Paris World’s Fair of 1937 and became one of the best-known pieces of Swedish functionalism. It is protected by copyright, so only a drawing is shown.
Materials: Bent laminated birch; seat and back of woven hemp webbing
Manufacture: Made by Firma Karl Mathsson in Värnamo; the frame is glued from thin laminates and pressed into shape.
The frame is one curving line from foot to neck.
The seat is woven webbing, not padding.
The legs are not ordinary legs but part of the same bend.
