Kovsh by Fabergé

Kovsh by Fabergé
House of Fabergé / Peter Carl Fabergé, Public domain

A Russian kovsh in silver and enamel, in which Fabergé’s workshops renewed an old Russian form.

Fabergé had workshops in St Petersburg and Moscow employing hundreds of craftsmen. The Moscow workshop made silver in the ‘Russian style’ with brilliant enamel. Examples are in the Hermitage and the Metropolitan Museum.

Materials: Silver, cloisonné and carved enamel, semi-precious stones

Manufacture: The silver was raised in the boat-shaped form of the kovsh; enamel laid in cells of fine wire and fired.

The boat-shaped bowl with a high handle – the old Russian kovsh.

Fabergé’s mark in Cyrillic and the workmaster’s initials.
