France-Champagne

Bonnard’s first poster: a laughing woman whose champagne foams across the whole sheet.
The poster went up in Paris in 1891 and prompted Toulouse-Lautrec to make posters. It shows the influence of Japanese woodcuts: flat areas and bold cropping. Copies are in MoMA and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs.
Materials: Colour lithograph on paper
Manufacture: Printed in three colours; the lettering drawn by hand and merged with the image.
The foam spilling to the edge of the sheet and becoming a pattern.
The hand-drawn lettering that is part of the picture.
