Chair by Hector Guimard

Art Nouveau in pearwood: the chair grows like a plant from the floor to the crest of the back.
Guimard designed furniture for his own buildings in Paris, among them the Castel Béranger and his own house on avenue Mozart. The chairs were made in small numbers and show Art Nouveau as a total art. Examples are in the Musée d’Orsay and the Metropolitan Museum.
Materials: Carved pearwood or walnut, leather or fabric upholstery
Manufacture: Solid wood carved by hand so that legs, rail and back flow together without joins.
The lines of the back continue down into the legs like stems and roots.
No right angles: every joint is sculpted soft.
