Chandelier by Victor Horta

An electric chandelier in which brass stems curl down and open into glass flowers.

Horta designed the lamps for his Brussels houses together with the houses, so that the lines in the ironwork, floors and lamps belong together. He was among the first to design for electric light. Lamps survive in the Horta Museum in Saint-Gilles.

Materials: Brass or bronze, glass

Manufacture: Bent and soldered brass tubes that carry the wiring; the glass shades blown or pressed.

The wiring is hidden in the curling stems – electricity becomes part of the plant form.

The shades hang downwards like bell flowers.
