Horta’s town house in Brussels where stair, iron and mosaic merge in whiplash lines.

Hôtel Tassel is counted as the first Art Nouveau building and showed that iron could be both structure and ornament. It is part of the World Heritage site of Victor Horta’s town houses in Brussels.

Materials: Wrought iron, stone, mosaic, glass, painting

Manufacture: Load-bearing iron columns were exposed and shaped like plant stems; floors and walls painted with the same lines.

The iron column in the stair hall branching like a stem.

The lines continuing from the floor mosaic into the wall painting.
