Robe de style from Lanvin

Robe de style from Lanvin
Jeanne Lanvin / Lanvin, CC0

A full, romantic 1920s dress with a low waist and a skirt on small panniers, an echo of the 18th century.

Lanvin’s robe de style became a classic for parties and weddings in the 1920s. It showed that Art Deco could be romantic too. Examples are in the Musée Galliera, the Metropolitan Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Materials: Silk taffeta, embroidery in beads and metal thread

Manufacture: A straight bodice with a full skirt held out by light hoops at the hips; the embroidery planned for the whole surface.

The full skirt from the hip – a counterpoint to the straight dresses of the time.

The embroidery in silver or beads, often in Lanvin blue.
