Miniskirt

The short skirt of the 1960s, linked to Mary Quant in London and André Courrèges in Paris.

Mary Quant sold short skirts in her shop Bazaar in Chelsea in the early 1960s, and André Courrèges showed short white dresses in his space-inspired collection of 1964. Who came first is disputed.

The miniskirt became a symbol of a new youth fashion, in which clothes were made for the young rather than their parents. The design is protected, so only a drawing is shown.

Materials: Wool, cotton, PVC and new synthetic fibres

Manufacture: Ready-to-wear made in large runs for boutiques and department stores.

The hem well above the knee.

Straight, geometric lines and strong colours.

Tights instead of stockings and suspenders – the short fashion demanded them.
