Moka Express
The octagonal coffee maker that brought espresso-style coffee into the home.
Alfonso Bialetti began making the coffee maker in 1933. Aluminium was a modern material in Mussolini's Italy, and the pot made it possible to make strong coffee at home.
After the war Alfonso's son Renato made the pot a bestseller. The design is often also attributed to Luigi De Ponti, who worked for the company.
Materials: Cast aluminium, Bakelite handle
Manufacture: Cast in aluminium; the water in the lower part is forced up through the coffee by steam pressure.
The eight sides, reminiscent of Art Deco forms.
The waist where the two halves of the pot screw together.
The valve on the lower part and the little figure with a moustache on the side.
