Blue Fluted

Royal Copenhagen’s first pattern: underglaze blue on fluted porcelain, made since 1775.

The porcelain factory in Copenhagen was founded in 1775, and Blue Fluted was its first pattern. It was based on Chinese models that were also copied at Meissen.

The pattern has been hand-painted ever since and exists in several variants: with a plain or fluted rim and with full or half lace on the edge. The marks changed over time and help with dating.

Materials: Hard-paste porcelain with underglaze cobalt painting

Manufacture: Hand-painted in Copenhagen; the blue is applied to the unfired body and covered by the glaze.

Flutes round the rim, like a mussel shell – hence the Danish name.

Three blue wavy lines under the base, the factory’s mark, and the painter’s number.
