Normandie

Cassandre's poster for the ocean liner, seen from below like a monument.

A. M. Cassandre made the poster in 1935, when the French liner Normandie entered service. The ship was the largest and fastest of its time, and the poster turns it into a temple.

Cassandre reduced the subject to geometric forms and let the perspective carry the message. The poster is one of the best-known works of Art Deco.

Materials: Colour lithograph on paper

Manufacture: Printed in several editions and sizes.

The bow of the ship seen from below, so that it becomes enormous.
