The orange fountain pen known as the Big Red.

The Duofold cost more than other pens and came with a 25-year guarantee. Its orange colour stood out at a time when pens were black.

The pen became a best-seller and has come back in new versions since.

Materials: Hard rubber and later celluloid, gold nib

Manufacture: Made in Janesville, Wisconsin, from 1921.

The Duofold appeared in 1921. It was first made of hard rubber in a bright orange and was nicknamed Big Red.

The pen was filled by pressing a button under the rear cap, which squeezed a rubber ink sac. From the middle of the 1920s the barrel was made of celluloid, and the pen came in more colours.
