Madame Récamier’s daybed

Madame Récamier’s daybed, Jacob Frères
François Gérard, Public domain

The daybed with scrolled ends named after the salon hostess Juliette Récamier.

The Jacob brothers furnished Juliette Récamier’s house in Paris around 1798, and Jacques-Louis David painted her on such a bed in 1800. A récamier today means a daybed with two ends. The bed is in the Louvre.

Materials: Mahogany with gilt bronze

Manufacture: Solid mahogany, the ends scrolling outward like an antique bed; bronze mounts screwed on.

The ends roll outward in a curve like a swan’s neck.

Smooth mahogany surfaces with a few gilt-bronze mounts – antiquity as fashion.
