Empire and Karl Johan
Napoleon's imperial style: heavy, symmetrical forms, mahogany and gilt mounts. In Sweden it is called the Karl Johan style.
Empire was created for Napoleon's court and took its forms from Rome and Egypt. The style was heavy, symmetrical and full of symbols of victory.
In Sweden it was named after Karl XIV Johan, the French marshal who became king in 1818. Swedish joiners often used native birch under the mahogany veneer.
