Rietveld Schröder House

Gerrit Rietveld and Truus Schröder’s house in Utrecht of 1924 – a De Stijl painting to live in, with movable walls.

Truus Schröder wanted a house without conventional rooms. With the cabinetmaker and architect Gerrit Rietveld she created a home whose upper floor can be one large room or several.

The house is the best-known example of De Stijl ideas in architecture and interiors and is today a World Heritage Site. The design is protected, so only a drawing is shown.

Materials: Brick, concrete, wood, steel; coloured surfaces

Manufacture: Built in 1924 for Truus Schröder and her children; the interior was developed jointly by her and Rietveld.

An open upper floor with sliding walls that divide the room.

Primary colours, black, grey and white in pure planes and lines.

Built-in furniture and windows that open at the corner.
