The tetrahedron
Tetra Pak’s package of plastic-coated board from 1952 – formed and filled in a continuous tube.
Ruben Rausing wanted a milk package that used as little material as possible and could be made in an unbroken process. The idea of sealing a tube alternately crosswise came from Erik Wallenberg.
The first machine was delivered in 1952 to a dairy in Lund, for cream. The brick-shaped Tetra Brik followed in 1963, and the company became one of Sweden’s largest. The form is protected, so only a drawing is shown.
Materials: Board coated with plastic
Manufacture: A tube of board was filled with liquid and sealed across, alternately at right angles, so that tetrahedra formed.
Four triangular faces.
Print with the dairy’s name and the contents.
Sealing seams along two edges, at right angles to each other.
