Braun T3

Dieter Rams’s pocket radio of 1958 – a pure rectangle with a grille and a round dial.
The transistor made small, battery-powered radios possible. Dieter Rams gave the T3 a form without ornament, in which every part has a purpose.
The form has often been compared with later digital music players. The T3 is a textbook example of Rams’s principle that good design is as little design as possible.
Materials: Plastic, metal
Manufacture: Mass-produced by Braun in Germany; transistors made it small and battery-powered.
A grille of round holes in a grid.
A round dial that is also the scale.
