Morris & Co.

William Morris’s firm for wallpapers, fabrics, carpets, stained glass and furniture. The designs are still printed under licence.

William Morris founded the firm with friends such as Edward Burne-Jones, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Philip Webb and Ford Madox Brown. They wanted to make art and craft for the whole home: stained glass, furniture, embroidery, wallpapers and fabrics.

Morris learned to dye with vegetable dyes and to print with wood blocks, and patterns such as Strawberry Thief, Trellis and Willow Bough became classics. The firm closed in 1940, but the patterns are still printed under licence by Morris & Co., now part of Sanderson.

Printed firm and pattern name in the selvedge; early prints with indigo and plant dyes.
